Cats of Manchester is a Finnish-English knitwear and vintage clothing label. Formed by Valpuri Vihriala and Katie Mason, two creatives whose paths crossed in Manchester UK.
Valpuri is from Lapland of Finland and has always been fascinated by patterns and styles in scandinavian knitting. Katie is from Nottingham, UK-a place with a great fashion history. A collector of vintage clothing and nic nacs, she brings her handpicked range to the label.
Valpuri and Katie met whilst doing the same art course at the university in Manchester. After graduation and different projects together and separately, they decided to combine forces. They both have experience in different areas: fashion, costume, music, art and film.
We are inspired by the northern cold winters, dark melodies and the romantic industrial city landscape that surrounds us in Manchester.
We also have our playful side, which is reflected in our name. We are inspired by the cats that lurk around every corner of Manchester, creative forces in the town that we are living in, eccentric music from scandinavia and UK. We are embracing the Finnish and English heritage in hand made, quality natural materials and products whilst playing with the contemporary culture that is involved with fashion, art and music.
We are currently producing all the knitwear ourselves, in our studio in Manchester. Working on knitting machines such as Toyota, Silver Reed and Brother. We source our material locally, most of them from a Mill that is specialized in small quantities of rare yarns, which means, that there is only small quantities that we can produce of one garment in an exactly same material, which we think makes them individual and special.
We are looking for new stockists all the time that suit our brand. We are currently being stocked at Nood (Manchester UK) (http://www.nood.co.uk/), Landbaby (Liverpool UK) (http://www.landbaby.co.uk/index.htm),Bionic 7 (Manchester UK) and Chinese Arts Centre (Manchester UK (http://www.chinese-arts-centre.org/).
As a young label we are stabilizing our identity and looking forward to work with different ideas and brands.
You can find us at Vintage and Craft markets all year round, details of which are on our facebook and blog.
